A block of mass m is pushed against a spring with spring constant k fixed at one end to a wall. The block slides on a frictionless table resting against this wall. The natural length of the spring is L and is compressed to half its natural length when the block is released. The velocity of the block after the spring acquires its natural length would be
  1. A(2/L)√(k/m)(2/L)√(k/m)
  2. B(L/2)√(k/m)(L/2)√(k/m)
  3. C√(kL/2m)√(kL/2m)
  4. DMore than one of the above
  5. ENone of the above

Correct answer: (B) (L/2)√(k/m)(L/2)√(k/m)

Explanation

The compression is L/2, so the stored energy ½k(L/2)² becomes kinetic energy ½mv². Hence v = (L/2)√(k/m).
