To bring out the critical edition of the Mahabharata under the editorship of V. S. Sukthankar, it was decidedजब वी॰ एस॰ सुकथंकर के संपादन में महाभारत का आलोचनात्मक संस्करण निकालने का निर्णय लिया गया, तब यह तय किया गया कि

1. Ato collect Sanskrit manuscripts written in variety of scripts from different parts of the countryदेश के विभिन्न हिस्सों से विभिन्न लिपियों में लिखी गई संस्कृत पांडुलिपियों को एकत्र किया जायेगा
2. Bto accord special consideration to the manuscripts found in Tamil countryतमिल में पाई गई पांडुलिपियों पर विशेष ध्यान देना
3. Cnot to mention any reference of Harappan cultureहड़प्पा संस्कृति के किसी भी संदर्भ का उल्लेख नहीं होना चाहिए
4. DMore than one of the aboveउपर्युक्त में से एक से अधिक
5. ENone of the aboveउपर्युक्त में से कोई नहीं
