Question 100

What lesson does the passage draw from the revival of stepwells?

Read the passage carefully and answer the question that follows. The Stepwells of India Long before modern pipelines, people in the dry regions of western India built stepwells to store water. These were deep structures with flights of steps leading down to the water, allowing people to reach it even when the level fell during summer. Many stepwells were far more than practical reservoirs. Richly carved pillars, cool shaded galleries and small shrines turned them into places where villagers gathered, rested and prayed. The Rani ki Vav in Gujarat, built in the eleventh century, is so finely decorated that it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With the arrival of piped water and tube wells, most stepwells were abandoned and many were filled with garbage. Recently, however, local communities and conservation groups have begun cleaning and restoring them. Apart from protecting heritage, restored stepwells help recharge groundwater, a vital benefit in areas that face severe water shortage. Their revival reminds us that traditional knowledge can still offer practical answers to modern problems. What lesson does the passage draw from the revival of stepwells?
